Mobile telecommunications account for the majority of telecoms connections in Sweden, with an estimated 15.3m mobile subscriptions in 2014. The rate of growth in mobile connections has slowed markedly from average double-digit rates in the decade up to 2006, as the market has become increasingly saturated and the economy has weakened. A period of modest mobile subscription growth is expected in 2015-19.
The number of subscriptions for mobile broadband totalled 8.1m by the end of June 2014, an increase of 7% from a year earlier. Operators will continue to encourage subscribers to migrate from pre-pay to contract tariffs. Contract subscriptions are on the rise, having increased from half of subscriptions a decade ago to two-thirds in 2012.
TeliaSonera launched fourth-generation (4G) services in 2009 and rolled out 4G in 2010, making Stockholm the world's first city with a 4G network. It has also launched 4G in all Nordic and Baltic countries and is being followed by Tele2 and Telenor, working in a network-sharing venture called Net4Mobility.
