摘要
In 2013 India was estimated to be the third-largest energy consumer in the world, after China and the US. Its huge population, which exceeds 1.2bn, will ensure that the country remains one of the world's largest energy consumers and a net energy importer.
India has the world's fifth-largest reserves of coal, which will remain the most important fuel in India's energy mix during the forecast period. Despite new investment in generating capacity, electricity supply will struggle to meet demand and rolling blackouts will persist.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects energy consumption in India to expand by an average of 4.6% a year in 2015-19, compared with forecast average real GDP growth of 6.5% a year. Growth in energy consumption would be higher were it not for supply-side inefficiencies.
