摘要
The Czech Republic spent 7.5% of GDP on healthcare in 2013 (a proportion that has remained unchanged since 2011). This is lower than the OECD average of 9.5%, but higher than in Poland and Hungary. With the population stable, The Economist Intelligence Unit expects healthcare spending to rise broadly in line with GDP in 2014-18; the share of healthcare spending in GDP will therefore remain broadly unchanged.
In 2012 total healthcare spending rose only slightly in koruna terms and dipped in US-dollar terms as the koruna continued to depreciate. Following the collapse of the previous centre-right government in June 2013, the new government has been gradually easing fiscal consolidation. As a result, healthcare spending in 2013 rose by 2.6% in local-currency terms.
We expect healthcare spending to rise gradually over the forecast period as the economy starts to revive, and particularly following the election of a government led by the centre-left Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD). This will bring annual average growth in health spending in 2014-18 to 4.3% in koruna terms. US-dollar growth will be slightly lower, at 4% per year, owing to the weaker exchange rate. Population growth will play only a small part in this rise in spending.
