The energy sector is a major contributor to the Malaysian economy, with mineral fuels, consisting of refined petroleum, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil, accounting for over 22% of total export earnings in the first nine, months of 2014.
Net energy consumption has increased steadily as a result of healthy economic growth, rising by an estimated 3.5% a year in 2010-14 to stand at 86.5m tonnes oil equivalent (toe) in 2014.
Malaysia has one of the highest levels of energy consumption per head among the countries that make up the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN), at nearly 2.9 toe in 2014.
