摘要

South Korea is one of Asia's largest retail markets, backed by a highly urbanised population, estimated at 50.3m in 2013; one-fifth of the population is concentrated in the capital, Seoul, making it a centre of commerce. According to Statistics Korea, South Korea's retail trade volume was W353.5trn (US$34O.3bn) in 2013, including W38.5trn (10.9%) generated by online and mobile e-commerce.
Private consumption and retail sales have been stagnating since 2011, following an economic rebound in 2010 from the global crisis of 2008-09. Furthermore, the prolonged housing market slump and the large overhang of household debt have delayed any sustained recovery in consumer spending.
