In comparison with other EU countries, financial services play a relatively small role in the Spanish economy. The sector accounted for 3.9% of GDP in 2013, well below the average of 5.5% across the wider economic zone. The industry employed 2.7% of working residents in Spain, slightly below the 2.9% average for the EU overall.
In January 2014 Spain exited a €41bn bank bail-out programme it had arranged with other euro zone countries at the height of the euro zone crisis, when the weakness of the banking sector was fuelling broader concerns about the outlook for the country.
