Norway's financial sector is small but highly developed. According to data from Finance Norway, around 45,000 people are employed in the financial sector. The sum of commercial and saving banks' total assets amounted to Nkr3.8trn (US$619bn) at end-2013, according to Finance Norway. In a country of just 5m inhabitants, this amounts to about US$122,600 per person.
The banking sector is subject to a number of risks. Banks have high exposure to shipping and commercial property, which is vulnerable to weaker global growth. In addition, high and rising household debt and the current rally in house prices, fuelled by low interest rates, give cause for concern.
