The energy sector is a major contributor to the Malaysian economy, with mineral fuels, consisting of refined petroleum, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil, accounting for nearly 22% of total export earnings in 2013.
Net energy consumption has increased steadily as a result of healthy economic growth, rising by an estimated 2.2% a year in 2009-13 to stand at over 81m tonnes oil equivalent (toe) in 2013.
