Mexico's automotive industry is one of the most important and dynamic areas of the domestic economy. In 2013 it accounted for 20.3% of total export sales and 16.8% of manufacturing GDP. The industry employed almost 570,000 people (640,500 including the auto parts segment) at end-2013,17.3% of all manufacturing employment. The industry received US$3.2bn of foreign direct investment (FDD in 2013, up by 19.5% from 2012.
Annual vehicle sales reached 1.1m in 2013, representing growth of 7.7% compared with 2012. This was the fourth consecutive year of growth, following a massive 314% contraction between 2007 and 2009 caused by the global recession. As a result, sales are still short of their 2006-07 peaks of around 1.5m units, leaving room for further growth.
