摘要
Australia is the world's leading exporter of coal by value and is expected to be the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2017. Coal accounts for the largest share of domestic energy consumption, mainly owing to the country's key role in electricity production. Energy consumption per head in Australia is among the highest in the world, as are its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per head.
Given Australia's hot climate and vulnerability to extreme weather events, energy policy is politically sensitive. Steep increases in energy prices over the past few years have made voters wary of additional costs associated with carbon pricing. The Liberal-National coalition government elected in September 2013 has removed the carbon tax (introduced in July 2012 and which included a floating price emissions-trading scheme—ETS—component due to come into effect in July 2015) and replaced it with a $A2.55bn (US$2.38bn) "direct action" emissions-reduction fund to pay companies to reduce carbon their emissions.
