At 8.1% of GDP, healthcare spending in Hungary is high in regional terms but low in OECD terms. In 2014 the OECD put Hungary 25th out of 34 for health spending as a share of GDP, and 29th for spending per head (in US$ purchasing power parity terms). In 2014 per head healthcare spending is a forecast US$1,076.
Total healthcare spending fell sharply in 2009 in US dollar terms, but returned to growth in 2010 as Hungary emerged from recession. Hungary experienced another year of negative growth in 2012 and only a mild expansion in 2013, but the economy is now growing more robustly and healthcare expenditure is broadly on an upward trend.
