Italy, the third-largest energy consumer in the EU, will remain one of the world's largest net energy importers, owing to its limited domestic oil and gas production. Encouraged by government incentives, Italy's renewable energy sector has recorded rapid expansion in recent years, predominantly as a result of growth in solar-power generation.
At the end of 2013 the government reduced the subsidies for renewables in order to lower electricity prices to consumers. This may slow the pace of expansion in renewable energy generation during the forecast period (2014-20).
