China's energy demand has soared as a result of strong economic growth. In 2009 the country overtook the US to become the world's largest consumer of energy. The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates China's total energy consumption in 2013 at 2.93bn tonnes oil equivalent (toe).
According to China's National Energy Administration (NEA), China consumed 5.32trn kwh of energy in 2013, up by 7.5% from the previous year. Service industries led the rise, accounting for 627bn kwh of energy consumption, representing an increase of 10.3%. Wind power consumption rose by 24.5%, nuclear power by 16.2%, hydropower by 12.3% and coal-fired power by 5.7%.
