摘要
The US spends more than any other country in the world on healthcare, at an estimated 16.9% of GDP in 2013. However, growth in healthcare expenditure has slowed over the past three years. The average annual rate of healthcare cost increases slowed from 3.9% in 2000-07 to 1.3% in 2011-13, partly because of the weaker economy.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects healthcare spending to pick up speed in 2015-19, growing by an average of 4.6% a year. This will raise healthcare spending as a percentage of GDP to 17.2% by 2019. Population growth means that spending per head will rise by an average of 3.8%.
High US healthcare expenditure is partly explained by problems in incentive structures for healthcare providers and the system of relatively fragmented private coverage, which reduces negotiating power vis-a-vis providers and raises overheads. Many other rich countries have central negotiations with healthcare providers or set prices centrally, and this limits costs.
