The mobile-phone sector has been seriously shaken up over the past two years by the arrival of Free Mobile, which launched its low-cost services in 2012.
Although it is small by comparison with the three established players-Orange, SFR and Bouygues Telecom—the entry of Free to the market has sparked a price war that has caused average revenue per user to fell sharply. The combined turnover of the three larger companies was down by 3.5% in 2012, and gross operating profits fell by 11.2%.
