South Korea has a large and well-developed financial services industry, with financial assets valued at over 840% of GDP. Domestic financial institutions have gained greater freedom of action from the state than in the past. Foreign competition has increased since the country began liberalising its financial services sector in the wake of the 1997-98 Asian financial crisis.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects South Korea's financial services sector to perform relatively well in 2014-18. The industry is likely to grow, despite volatility in global financial markets in response to the tapering of US government bond purchases and concerns about a large overhang of household debt.
