Indonesia is the largest vehicle market in South-east Asia, and the country's automotive sector is an important pillar of domestic manufacturing. The domestic car market (deregulated in 1999) is one of the most competitive parts of the economy.
Regulations issued by Bank Indonesia (BI, the central bank) in mid-2012 and extended to sharia-compliant lenders in February 2013 tightened lending criteria for purchases of passenger cars and motorcycles (around 70% of which are bought on credit).
