The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that expenditure on healthcare was equivalent to 4.0% of GDP in 2013, and we expect the ratio to rise slightly, to 4.2%, by 2018 as spending growth outpaces economic expansion.
Demand for healthcare is likely to expand in 2014-18 as the elderly increase in number, consumer awareness of healthcare services grows and access to services is improved (in part owing to increased privatisation of services). Although population growth is slowing, from 1.6% in 2013 to 1.4% in 2018, it will remain a major driver of healthcare demand.
