摘要
Mexico has the third-largest share of the Americas mobile-phone market by revenue (7%), after the US (around 55%) and Brazil (just under 30%). Yet mobile-phone penetration, at an estimated 94.5% in 2014, was below the Latin American average and among the lowest in the region. Supported by declining handset and access costs, Mexico should achieve universal coverage by 2016—it will be among the last countries to do so globally. Coverage will expand to 110.6% by 2019.
The domestic telecoms market is currently very concentrated, with America Movil holding around 70% of the mobile and fixed-line telephone market (through Telcel and Telmex respectively), and Grupo Televisa and TV Azteca holding 60% and 30% of the broadcast market respectively. Telefonica (Spain), under its local commercial brand, Movistar, and Nextel (US) are the only foreign operators directly involved in the Mexican market.
Limited competition has led to high prices by international standards (mobile and broadband services prices are 26% and 31% higher respectively than the OECD average) and has hindered telephony uptake, especially in rural areas where around 20% of the Mexican population live and where extreme poverty is concentrated.
