The Economist Intelligence Unit's baseline forecast is for healthcare spending to rise by an annual average of 64% in US dollar terms until 2018, when it is expected to reach US$151bn.
Real growth in income over the medium term is expected to remain below levels before the financial crisis in 2008. The government's budget position will be more constrained, which will also limit healthcare spending growth.
Healthcare spending is forecast to average 5.3% of GDP in 2014-18, compared with almost 12% in Germany. The government aims to increase this eventually to 6-7% of GDP.
