摘要
Although Indonesia is South-east Asia's largest economy, it is also one of the poorest countries in the region, with low levels of income. The quality of healthcare is generally low.
The country spends less on healthcare than its neighbours: The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates Indonesia's healthcare expenditure in 2013 at the equivalent of 2.8% of GDP, compared with 3.3% in Thailand and 4.6% in the Philippines.
Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN), a healthcare system which aims to provide universal health insurance by 2019, was implemented in January 2014 by merging the four previous funds: Jamkesmas, Jamkesda, Jamsostek and Asabri. Because of funding constraints the scheme will be introduced only gradually. Initially, the JKN will do little more than integrate a number of existing insurance schemes. However, a substantial increase in healthcare spending will occur later in the decade as additional people and more procedures are covered.
