Vietnam is an important producer of oil and natural gas. It produces a surplus of crude oil and coal and is self-sufficient in natural gas (imports of the latter to meet electricity-generation demands are expected to begin in 2015). However, with the economy growing at a rate of more than 5% annually, the country could have problems meeting its energy needs in the long term.
Vietnam has been a net importer of electricity since 2005, with most imports coming from neighbouring China and Laos. Geopolitical tensions between Vietnam and China arising from contested claims over the South China Sea have prompted a push for greater energy independence to minimise reliance, on Chinese electricity exports.
Energy demand will remain strong during the 2015-19 forecast period, buoyed by industrialisation and urbanisation. The expansion of industrial output will underpin rapid growth in energy consumption in the medium term.
