摘要
The small size of Hong Kong's population means that total healthcare spending in the territory will be modest relative to that in many other markets, at a forecast US$2ibn in 2018. Health spending will rise by around 5% a year in nominal local-currency terms in 2014-18.
Hong Kong's spending on health as a proportion of GDP will also remain relatively low for a developed economy in 2014-18. Expenditure will still stand at just 5.9% of GDP in 2018, compared with 9.9% in Japan, 10.2% in the UK and 18.2% in the US.
This will partly reflect the local demographic balance-only 16.7% of the territory's population will be over 65 by 2018, compared with 27.8% in Japan. Older age groups require a disproportionately high level of medical spending: Singapore, 12.7% of whose population will be aged over 65 in 2018, will spend just 3.9% of GDP on healthcare in that year.
