Hong Kong is one of the world's most sophisticated financial centres. It ranks among the world's largest foreign-exchange trading centres, and is home to Asia's largest concentration of insurers. Financing and insurance employed over 213,994 people in Hong Kong at end-June 2014 (or 5.6% of the total workforce, according to the territory's Census and Statistics Department).
The volume of renminbi deposits held in Hong Kong will wax and wane in line with changing expectations of that currency's appreciation and interest rate against other currencies. The rise in renminbi trade settlement will also contribute to the deposit holding. Demand for renminbi financial services in Hong Kong is likely to grow independently of deposit trends, as investors will be attracted by the increasing number of channels through which offshore renminbi can flow into China.
