In 2013 financial institutions accounted for 8.2% of gross value added in the Netherlands, and for 3.2% of total employment. Domestic and foreign institutions compete to offer a broad range of services. Private fund management is well developed in a European context, as is venture capital.
The global crisis forced a permanent reordering of the Dutch financial system, with the state now likely to be significantly involved in the sector for most of 2014-18. It owns two major banks, ABN Amro and SNS Reaal, and supports other parts of the sector through various guarantees and capital injections.
