The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that total energy consumption on a per head basis rose slightly, to 2.7 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) per head in 2013, up from 2.6 toe per head in 2012. Total consumption growth is expected to pick up gradually during the forecast period in line with stronger economic growth. However, the rate of consumption growth is not forecast to return to pre-economic crisis levels.
The power-generating infrastructure is ageing quickly and regulation within the sector has yet to make significant improvements, although increasing investment from local and foreign firms (particularly in the expansion of gas provision) should help to reverse this trend over the forecast period.
