India is the world's sixth-largest producer of vehicles, but its automotive industry has been in low gear for the past two years. Slow GDP growth, rising interest rates, sharply higher petrol prices and labour disputes have taken their toll on the sector's performance. But the industry is hoping that India's new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, which was elected in May, will revive its fortunes.
The BJP was elected on a platform that promises to rejuvenate economic growth, boost manufacturing, increase employment and build infrastructure. The industry wants the government to retain the excise duty cuts introduced by the previous government earlier this year, make further tax cuts benefiting the sector, develop transport infrastructure and begin a comprehensive fleet modernisation to replace old, polluting vehicles.
