Malaysia has one of the most well-developed automotive sectors in the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and will remain an important regional market for motor vehicles and parts in 2015-19. It is one of the largest markets in ASEAN for passenger cars and one of the biggest in the regional bloc for automotive parts.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects growth in sales of passenger vehicles to average about 3.7% a year in the forecast period, up from just 1.4% in 2014. Sales growth slowed sharply in the second half of 2014 as Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM, the central bank) lifted its policy interest rate. Although further increases are expected in 2015-19, their impact on vehicle sales will be offset by firming economic growth and rising incomes.
The automotive sector will continue to be a focus for government policies aimed at increasing competitiveness and making Malaysia a centre for energy-efficient vehicles.
