France's energy sector accounts for 2% of total GDP and employs 230,000 people. The Economist Intelligence Unit's forecast for the country's total primary energy consumption in 2014 is 251m tonnes oil equivalent (toe), making it the second-largest market in the EU after Germany.
Domestic production supplies about half of total energy consumption. Its nuclear industry makes France a net exporter of electricity, but the country's dependence on imported oil and gas makes it a net importer of energy overall.
