There is a substantial risk to the economy from increased financial market nervousness about Turkey's large external financing requirement and its volatile economic growth performance. Turkey's other economic fundamentals are generally quite solid. The public finances are in good health and the banking sector is solidly capitalised and well regulated.
The prospect of tighter global liquidity and a degree of uncertainty about the direction of domestic economic policies during the busy electoral cycle in Turkey up to mid-2015 has curbed capital inflows, periodically putting the Turkish lira under pressure since mid-2013.
