South Korea is the world's fifth-largest producer of vehicles, behind China, the US, Japan and Germany. In 2013 South Korea produced around 4.5m units, accounting for 5.2% of production worldwide, according to the International Organisation of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA).
The sector performed sluggishly in 2013 and 2014, owing to weakness in export markets. Domestic vehicle production excluding production from overseas plants edged up by 0.1% in 2014, while exports declined by 0.9%, according to the Ministry of trade, Industry and Energy (MOTE).
Two-thirds of all motor vehicles produced in South Korea are exported. In 2014 a total of 4.53m vehicles were manufactured in South Korea, 3.06m of which were sold abroad.
