Throughout the past two decades, Ecuador's expenditure on healthcare has been extremely low by both regional and developed-country standards and, although this has increased under the left-wing president, Rafael Correa, it is still around two-thirds of the Latin American average.
However, The Economist Intelligence Unit expects public healthcare spending to pick up during the forecast period as a result of the president's ambitious public-investment programme. Given he was re-elected to another five-year term in February 2013, this is expected to continue until at least the end of our forecast period in 2018.
