South Korea is one of the world's most oil-intensive industrialised countries. It is the world's tenth-largest energy consumer and depends on imports for about 97% of its energy demand. South Korea is increasingly looking abroad for opportunities to develop resources.
Energy consumption grew by an estimated 2.7% in 2014, to 2754m tonnes oil equivalent (toe). The Economist Intelligence Unit expects energy consumption to grow by around 2.2% a year in 2015-20, reflecting increased car ownership and growth in economic output as a whole.
South Korea aims to increase energy efficiency, improve energy security and raise the share of energy obtained from renewable and cleaner sources. A key aim is to cut emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases.
