Venezuela was one of the region's earliest adopters of mobile telephony and one of the first Latin American countries in which mobile-telephony penetration overtook fixed-line penetration (in 1999). The sector experienced a very rapid expansion in the past decade, but growth is expected to slow in the forecast period as services reach saturation point.
Mobile-penetration rates are above the levels in most countries in the region, reaching an estimated 107% in 2013. However, growth in recent years has already slowed considerably, as volatile economic conditions have forced some consumers to cancel contracts. Growth in new mobile subscriptions will be slow over the forecast period, with penetration levels rising only marginally, to 108 per 100 in 2018.
