Active mobile subscriptions rose by 0.3% in 2013 to 22.9m, after felling by 2.5% in 2012, according to the National Authority for Management and Regulation of Communications (ANCOM). This represents an active penetration rate of 113.9%. Pyramid data put the penetration rate at 122.7 in 2013. Mobile penetration is forecast to grow moderately over the next five years, reaching 133% in 2018.
The value of the mobile telephone market is growing in local-currency terms because of the growth of the smartphone market. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects strong growth over the medium turn, driven by smartphone and tablet sales, and with most of the growth in revenue coming from the data-services segment, with the market valued at US$3.5bn in 2018.
