The Economist Intelligence Unit expects healthcare spending to grow only modestly on average in nominal local-currency terms in 2014-18 as a result of ongoing fiscal consolidation and sluggish consumer spending following the economic crisis. Total spending will remain below its pre-crisis level throughout the forecast period.
We expect total healthcare spending to remain almost unchanged in 2014-16, before rising by 1.3% in 2017 and 3.6% in 2018 in local-currency terms. The average annual rate of spending growth in 2014-18 will be 1.2% in local-currency terms or 0.2% in US dollar terms (owing largely to a 5.4% decline in 2015, in line with expected currency movements).
Spending per head will rise by an average of 0.9% a year in 2014-18 (local-currency terms). As a percentage of GDP, spending is expected to fell below 9% in the forecast period, from an estimated 9.1% in 2014, as the economy recovers only slowly and the government continues to implement cost-cutting policies.
