Japanese consumers have eagerly embraced mobile telephony, and the mobile market remains dynamic given the popularity of 4G services and long-term evolution (LTE) technology.
The number of mobile subscriptions reached an estimated 152.9m (or 120 per 100 people) in 2014, and The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that it will exceed 179m (142 per 100 people) in 2019. A major factor driving mobile-phone demand during the forecast period will be fester access speeds and improvements in smartphone technology.
Japan has lagged behind other developed countries in the use of smartphones, but this is now changing quickly. Smartphone usage jumped to 42% of the population in 2013, from 28% in 2012, and is estimated to have surged to 62% in 2014, according to a market-research company, App Annie. Japan surpassed the US as the largest market for apps in October 2013.
