The Bulgarian financial sector was hit hard by the global economic and financial crisis of 2008-10, but began to recover in 2011. The sector will continue to face difficulties arising from the weak economic recovery and the lingering effects of the sovereign debt crisis in the euro zone.
The stability of the banking sector was shaken by a run on locally owned Corporate Commercial Bank (CCB), which led to CCB's collapse in June 2014. Non-performing loans (NPLs) have risen appreciably since the crisis and bank profits have been squeezed.
