Iran's economy, the second-largest in the Middle East and North Africa after Saudi Arabia, will return to mild growth in 2014 after two years of recession, but will remain severely constrained unless there is a substantial easing of the international sanctions targeting the financial and energy sectors.
Negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme are approaching a November 24th deadline. If an agreement is reached, the economy could, with a bit of a lag, rebound to growth rates fluctuating around 5%, which was the average real GDP growth rate in the ten years preceding the imposition of US and EU sanctions in 2012.
