摘要

Ireland is heavily dependent on imported energy sources, with about 90% of the country's primary energy requirement sourced from overseas. The country has no currently exploitable coal or oil reserves, although it has large exploitable peatlands and some exploitable off shore gas fields. In late 2012 a small Irish exploration company, Providence, announced that it had found a substantial oilfield off the south coast of Ireland.
Ireland was able to meet its own natural-gas requirements until 1993, but since then gas output has decreased and demand rose sharply in the pre-crisis period to 2008. Imports, mainly from Norway, now account for 95% of total gas consumption. New finds have been made off the west coast, but their development has been beset by delays.
