Total expenditure on healthcare in Nigeria was estimated at 6.2% of GDP in 2013, of which nearly two-thirds was spent in the private sector. Other public expenditure priorities, including security and elections, will moderate public health spending in 2014-15, but overall expenditure on healthcare is expected to increase over the forecast period, to 6.6% of GDP by 2018.
Total healthcare spending in local-currency terms will increase by an annual average of approaching 20% in 2014-18, driven by rising incomes, price inflation and population growth of around 2.6% a year. In US dollar terms, healthcare spending will increase by 12.2% a year in the same time frame.
