Sri Lanka's telecommunications and technology sector is not large or sophisticated by international standards, and the telecoms sector accounted for less than 1% of GDP in 2013. However, there has been a lengthy boom in mobile telecoms services, which has served to develop this part of the sector to a more advanced level compared with most other countries in South Asia. Sri Lanka was the first country to introduce 3G services in 2006 and it introduced 4G services in 2013. Investment and sales by mobile operators are also a driver of GDP growth. For example, at the end of 2013 Bharti Airtel announced a planned SLRs2bn (LJS$15.5m) expansion of its 3G network to improve coverage.
