Demand for mobile services is set to continue to rise over the forecast period, with mobile subscriptions increasing from an estimated 129 per 100 people in 2013 to 142 per 100 people in 2018. This implies that a sizeable share of mobile-phone users have multiple subscriptions, usually for separate personal and business accounts. Some of these subscriptions may also be for data-only packages.
Switzerland ranked among the lowest countries in Western Europe in terms of mobile-phone penetration, but is hardly a laggard in global terms, with a rate of well over 100%. It has caught up quickly, with mobile subscriptions rising at an average rate of 5.8% per year over the past decade, but growth is expected to slow to only 2.6% per year on average in 2014-18.
