The Vietnamese financial services industry has grown rapidly in recent years. At the equivalent of 404% of GDP in 2013, Vietnam's financial asset base is smaller relative to the size of its economy than those of Malaysia (468%) and China (624%), but larger than those of Thailand (363%), the Philippines (315%) and Indonesia (111%).
In terms of economic output, the category "financial, banking and insurance activities" accounted for 5.5% of GDP in 2013, according to preliminary data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam. The sector employed just 0.6% of the labour force at end-2013.
