The mobile market has boomed following a successful liberalisation programme and increased competition. As a result of these trends the International Telecommunication Union estimated that mobile-phone subscriptions accounted for 99.72% of total telephone subscribers in 2013. According to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the proportion was 99.86% in June 2014, compared with about 70% in 2002.
The number of mobile subscribers is forecast to increase to nearly 167m by 2018. This will translate to a penetration rate of 84%, up from 72.9% in 2013.
