The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts Singapore's mobile penetration at slightly over 163% in 2014, reflecting the fact that many consumers have multiple subscriptions (using different phones and devices for personal and business use, for example), and also because of the use of data subscriptions for machine-to-machine communication.
SingTel remains the dominant player, claiming over 47% of the mobile market as of end-March 2013, ahead of Starhub (with 28%) and M1 (27%). Bolstered by the backing of the state, which owns 55% of the company, SingTel is cash-rich and has diversified by investing in media and web start-ups through Innov8, a wholly owned subsidiary.
