摘要
China's energy demand has soared as a result of three decades of strong economic growth. In 2009 the country overtook the US to become the world's largest consumer of energy. The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates China's total energy consumption in 2013 at 2.95bn tonnes oil equivalent (toe).
However, the country's average energy consumption per head is low, at just over one-half the level in Japan and around one-third of that in the US. There is substantial potential for Chinese energy demand to grow as the economy develops further and living standards rise.
