The conservative National Party won 60 out of 121 seats at the September 2014 election and, despite the loss of one seat in a by-election in March 2015, will lead a coalition with three small parties until the next poll, due in 2017.
The Economist Intelligence Unit projects a budget surplus in 2015 of NZ$476m (US$35om), equivalent to 0.2% of GDP. The public finances will remain in the black for the remainder of the forecast period.
We expect the current account to remain in deficit in the forecast period. The shortfall will be equivalent to 4.7% of GDP this year and will average 5.9% in 2015-19.
