Juan Carlos Varela of the centre-right Partido Panamenista (PP) was sworn in as president on July ist for a five-year term, promising to restore strength and credibility to the country's democracy and institutions and to fight corruption.
GDP is forecast to grow by 6.5% in 2014, driven by construction, but expansion will slow from 2015 as large investment projects are concluded. Inflation is forecast to remain at around 4% in 2014-18 as the economy cools.
Completion of the Panama Canal's new locks is expected in December 2015, followed by a three-month test period, with commercial transits now set to begin in the first half of 2016 (a year later than initially planned).
