The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that the People's Action Party will serve a full term, after it won a large parliamentary majority in the 2011 general election. We also expect it to win the next poll, which is due in 2016.
We have revised down our forecast for real GDP growth in 2014 to 3.5%, from 4.1% previously, owing to weak expansion in the second quarter. Growth will accelerate to 4.7% a year in 2015-18, reflecting fester increases in exports.
The current-account surplus will remain substantial in the next five years, at the equivalent of 16.7% of GDP on average, owing to continuing surpluses on the merchandise trade account.
